The UNESCO program "Man and the Biosphere" (referred to as MaB) has been helping to find local solutions to global problems and supporting sustainable development for over fifty years. The program contributes to the conservation of biodiversity, the provision of ecosystem services, and the sustainable use of natural resources in member states. Ensuring a livable environment and a just economy is essential, providing communities with ideas for mitigating and adapting to climate change.
What We Do
Preserving Natural Habitats
The West Estonian Islands Biosphere Reserve is dedicated to preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of the West Estonian islands under conditions of moderate human impact. We conduct research to ensure the preservation of local species' habitats for future generations.
Education
We believe that education is key to promoting sustainable natural resource use. Our goal is to raise awareness through educational programs about the importance of conserving natural habitats and the interconnectedness of all living beings.

Since 1990 West Estonian Archipelago Biosphere Reserve, we have been part of the UNESCO MAB (Man and Biosphere) network, working to preserve a legacy of sustainable nature use and associated cultural landscapes and traditional habitats.
